With post-holiday blues at an all-time high and the New Zealand Coffee Festival right around the corner, YUS! We thought what better time than now to explore some of Auckland’s hidden cafe gems.
Having spent multiple weekends over the holidays exploring the Auckland cafe scene, we have discovered some of the best Auckland has to offer. Come take a journey with us through our favourite spots to grab a coffee or a bagel whilst graming every second of it.
Bow & Tie Cart – Ellerslie
Now this is the definition of a hidden gem! These guys are the epitome of how coffee should be, simple and unique.
When a shop front, staff and kitchen just scream admin, why not create a stylish mobile cart aboard a bicycle? The man behind this solo operation is Gustavo who is an expert in all things coffee. Brewing and roasting his own coffee beans every week, crafting smooth and flavour packed coffee, Bow & Tie really are a one-of-a-kind product and service.
Normally situated at the Ellerslie Train Station on Kalima St, it’s definitely worth getting off your morning train commute for. Just grab your caffeine fix, have a chat with the friendly staff and then catch the next train.

Bestie – K Rd
We all know K Rd is the centre of Auckland’s wacky and wonderful culture. With a blend of colourful characters, bars, cafes and other shops we shouldn’t mention, it’s no surprise there is a hidden gem tucked away somewhere.
Bestie is located at the back of Saint Kevins Arcade with a truly special view of the SkyTower and Auckland’s skyline. A perfect spot to stop in for a quick coffee or get lost in for a few hours doing work or people watching.
Matching wonderfully created coffee from Auckland’s own Kokako Organic Coffee Roasters with a fresh and exciting food menu, it’s no surprise this place is buzzing during breakfast and lunchtime. For us, the pick of the menu was the FlatBread with Spicy Chorizo, along with a side of potato skin – it’s a must have!
This is definitely a spot that once you’ve been you’ll be scheduling in a visit at least once a week, if not every day.
Richmond Rd – Grey Lynn
Smack bang in the heart of Grey Lynn you will find this vibrant and lively cafe, perfect for any time of day. Richmond Rd has a wide range of exciting and modern food options for you to choose from. So whether it’s your first visit or your 10th you will always be spoilt for choice!
However, the real winner is the coffee. At Richmond Rd, they create outstanding coffee, whatever your taste. Using the finest beans that Allpress have to offer the friendly staff will provide you with a coffee that will have you hooked and asking for a coffee card. You will then be in on Ponsonby’s worst kept secret.
This will quickly become your go-to for all things coffee and warmth, whether it’s that impromptu business meeting, first date or cafe with your bestie.
If you really get swept off your feet by what the cafe has to offer and haven’t stopped raving about them to your workmates or friends, then even better these guys will be able to look after catering for your next event!!

Eighthirty – High Street
Eighthirty coffee is the gift that keeps on giving. The coffee beans are some of Auckland’s most renowned and sought after. But they also have several cafes dotted around the city, ensuring that you will always be able to get your coffee fix.
Their latest and greatest location is perched up on High Street, amongst the craziness that is Auckland city.
The team at Eighthirty take pride in bringing the world’s best flavours right to you. They have three distinct beans that they create and roast themselves. These include beans from Brazil, Colombia and Ethiopia. If you want you could take a cafe trip around the world all from the comfort of their cafe.
Make sure you get on down to one of their cafes to sample the best of the best and we are sure that you will be completely swept off your feet by their coffee. Come experience the cities latest gem.

Weta Coffee – Onehunga
We are venturing out a little bit for our last hidden gem. All the way out to Onehunga, not that far but it sounded good.
This is truly a hidden gem. This little cafe has been collecting outstanding reviews about their home-brewed roasts and service for ages now. If you haven’t heard, then you must have been hidden under a rock.
Not only do these guys have an outstanding home-brewed blend, they also take pride in bringing to you the best in single origin roasts from around this massive rock we call earth. Whether it be from Ethiopia or Bolivia and everywhere in between.
